Food as Medicine
By Richard Collins, M.D.

"Part of the secret of success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside…" Mark Twain

Indeed, welcome to the American "food fight" from Atkins to Ornish, Sugar Busters, The Zone, Protein Power, AHA Step Diet, ADA Diet, DASH, Scarsdale,
Pritiken, Cooper, McDougall to the ever famous Mayo Clinic Diet, not to mention the tabloid diets of the rich and famous. That’s right, you’ve read about them as
you’re waiting at your local grocer’s check out stand. There’s the ever popular Grapefruit Diet, the Drinking Man’s Diet, Dial-A-Meal, Eat-whatever-you-want Diet
followed by proclaimed calorie burning vitamins, herbs, supplements, mineral additives, fiber expanders, fat and carbohydrate blockers, faux sugars and fats. And of course, there are the socio-cultural diets of the Mediterranean, the Hawaiians, the Eskimos, and the peoples of the Pacific Rim.

It isn’t any surprise that our society is confused on foods. This year, headlines have said…Eggs are Back, Fat Lowers Cholesterol, Trans Fats are Out and Butter is In,
Bagels are Out, Whole Grains are In.

The concept of "food as medicine and medicine as food" is not new, it was said by Hippocrates over two thousand years ago. This past year has seen the beginning of true functional foods with the FDA release of food products officially recognized as reducing the risk of heart disease.
