Mark your calendars or register today for the 2019 Brookhouser Memorial Lecture. This year’s topic will cover Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus Infection (PANDAS) and its impact on children and adolescents.

Purpose

Behavior symptoms associated with PANDAS are extremely disruptive for the child and their families. Because of the controversy regarding diagnosis and therapies, larger and more definitive studies which prospectively track symptoms are needed. Prospective pilot data collected from patients could be the source of good data for more controlled multi-institutional studies. This lecture provides information on various biological systems and symptoms associated with PANDAS and optimal management and treatment options to improve patient care.

Objectives

  • Identify the symptoms associated with PANDAS.
  • Explain the temporal relationship between PANDAS and acute strep infections.
  • Discuss that multiple disciplines are required for assessment and treatment of PANDAS.
  • Recognize that prospective data is needed to monitor disease progression and treatment effectiveness.
