7:15 – Q&A / Facilitated Discussion

Parking and entrance is in the South parking lot.

The term moral injury has been gaining popularity online, especially after Wendy Dean MD and Simon Talbot MD’s article was released on STAT news. Moral Injury is an important topic to discuss as this terminology offers a broader understanding than the word “burnout.”

“Burnout suggests a health professional is at fault for their emotional state: they aren’t resilient enough, and that they need to learn to recover better. Yet moral injury suggests something larger is at play. The consequences of this terminology and mindset change are immense, as we learn that hospital dynamics, insurance, litigation, electronic medical records, and policy must evolve, for health professionals to thrive.”

Join us as Wendy Dean, MD discusses moral injury and its implications on healthcare.

BOYS TOWN NATIONAL RESEARCH HOSPITAL – 2019 Patrick E. Brookhouser, M.D. Memorial Lecture

Mark your calendars or register today for the 2019 Brookhouser Memorial Lecture. This year’s topic will cover Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus Infection (PANDAS) and its impact on children and adolescents.

Purpose

Behavior symptoms associated with PANDAS are extremely disruptive for the child and their families. Because of the controversy regarding diagnosis and therapies, larger and more definitive studies which prospectively track symptoms are needed. Prospective pilot data collected from patients could be the source of good data for more controlled multi-institutional studies. This lecture provides information on various biological systems and symptoms associated with PANDAS and optimal management and treatment options to improve patient care.

Objectives

  • Identify the symptoms associated with PANDAS.
  • Explain the temporal relationship between PANDAS and acute strep infections.
  • Discuss that multiple disciplines are required for assessment and treatment of PANDAS.
  • Recognize that prospective data is needed to monitor disease progression and treatment effectiveness.
